Rang De Black....

When reviews of Rang De Basanti are flowing left, right and centre, I could't resist writing this one.

The movie is undubtedly well made and technically superior. The performances are good. Aamir Khan excels himself. It is not difficult for him to improve perfection. But the man who steals the show singlehandedly is Atul Kulkarni. His transformation from a communalist to a nationalist is simply superb. Also A R rehman music is great.

But all the effort seems wasted. The movie is entertaining and timepass but thats it. If it was a movie meant to give any message, it fails miserably. I don't understand what the message is still now. What was it trying to tell. And to compare the movie to Dil Chahta Hai and Swades is totally stupid. Though many ppl mayn't agree with what swades told, but everybody will agree that it had certain message and thinking behind it. But not with Rang De Basanti.

It seems more of a revenge drams with popcorn nationalism inserted in between. The MiG 21 issue that it raises is valid but the solution it suggested looks straight out of some comic book. First the protagonist tries some violent means to prove their point and in the end dies. Seen that b4. Heard it b4. Well thats what I m telling you. And the radio part is oft times repeated in Hindustani and Phir bhi Dil hai hindustani. Come to think of Hindustani(Kamal Hassan) it has somewhat similar theme but it was executed much better.

The worst part is that they target individuals in the process and never looks as if they intend to change the system. The way we saw in Yuva. Believe me if it had been some Sunny Deol movie we would have passed it on as something runoff the mill stuff. It is only bcoz of Aamir that the movie is being talked abt.

Though as I had said previously music was superb but the songs somehow were picturised all in the same way and halted the progress of the movie. But cann't complain abt that because movie was anyway very slow.

And I frankly fail to understand why there is so much hohulla over the movie. Why it is being pitted as 1 of the best movie ever made? Why 5* reviews???

So watch Yuva or Swades once more. And if you want to see a enjoyable youth flick, go for DCH.

Dear Mr. Desperado for attention,

Well you sure did get mine with that review. First things first. Its a pity that u didnt like the movie. Fine. Your personal choice. But whats really funny is the way you are getting agitated at the way others are liking it? Are you hopping mad u didnt like it? That you are not part of this rising feeling that almost everyone who saw the movie is feeling? This urge to atleast try doing things for the country rather than complain. I guess so. And my bet is you are gonna end up being one of the cribbers who wonders what was great abt the movie and continues complaining while others get the message and move on. Well in fact I shouldnt be surprised. I went through your profile and saw that u have listed 'Kya Kehna' as one of your favorite movies. Now I doubt how many would you get to side you in that opinion. Sure it was a different movie. But no. 1 - the songs sucked and were all outta place(and u complain abt the songs of RDB) 2- there was drama but also plenty of melodrama 3 - except for preity who also had an above avg and not exceptional performance others were so-so while saif and chandrachur were a casting coup na..wat say?

Well the movie is taglined 'A generation awakens'..Sadly either you have not been awakened..or it can be interpreted as you dont belong to our generation and i doubt if any generation at all..take care!

lavin thats what i asked in my mail? I am so dumb that I didn't fathom the message in the movie. Please tell me what it is? You wrote so long a comment. But never in it you could tell me what the movie was about? Well thats the problem with the movie.
And if one fable of killing a politician to avenge a freind's death has awaken you(wonder u were sleeping uptil now), then I suggest you watch some sunny deol and mithunda's flicks. You will be awakened more. or better read some Nagaraj or Super Commando Dhruv comics.
But I sincerely request you not to try anything so stupid and foolish as was done in the movie.
So good Morning Lavin....

Hi,
yes, there is no point in comparing DCH or Swades to this movie as they all are from different genre and convey different messages. May be you want to stand away from the crowd purposefully and so you say that there isn't anything great from the movie. One of the class apart movies with excellent sync of the past and the present. Far far better than normal "poor hero, rich heroine, elope, get married, cry and inbetween sing a lot of songs" kind of movies. Many of us may not know some of the happenings in the past (about Bhagat Singh, Azad etc.) and their brave past has been done a great justice in this movie. It stirs our nationalist spirit. If it hasn't for anyone, I don't have any comments for them!!!
As far as the message of the movie goes - from my perspective - The present day youth may look happy go lucky, but have infinite spirit, and are ready for any sacrifice to uproot corruption and bureaucracy. Flowery words, yes, but that is what I think the movie tries to convey, and to some extent, has succedded. Some may sleep over the movie, but, it has sent strong signals across many. As far as killing the politician goes, it is to stress the fact about the hyperactive youth. They commit a crime in haste, but don't try to hush it up but expose themselves and get killed. Hope I have done some justice to your questions..
Cheers!!

i m a bit surprised that there are some ppl who don't know such basic facts as bhagat singh assembly bomb case, kakori robbery etc. Yes definitley RDB would ignite nationalist spirit in them. Now what to say about such persons who don't have even such basic knowledge of freedom struggle of their country.
movie doesnt have a "rich boy meets poor girl" plot. But it definitely has a nth time repeated "revenge for a closed one's murder" theme. If u call this a new theme then I advise you to view some more Hindi flicks. Every second movie u will find on this theme only.
And just read the reviews on many of the blogs. You will know that most of the people think like me about the movie. Anyways that doesn't matter.
The reasons that most of us are reacting so strongly on the movie is because we feel that with Yuva and Swades, Indian movies have entered a new era. We are moving from revenge dramas towards a more constructive channeling of youth resource of today. But sadly RDB has taken us a step backwards. And my heart goes to Aamir for doing this after the dud called Mangal Pandey.
I hope it doesn't start a trend of revenge movies coming again. May the momentum started by Yuva and Swades continues.

I agree with Mr. Venkat when he says one can't compare DCH and Swades, because they all belong to different genres and they have different ends to meet. And if it's the message that irked you, then at least concede that the movie is well made, because if it hadn't been then the message wouldn't have gotte across to you with such effects as to your writing a negative review for the movie, with arguments solely based on the message.

And, tell me which other Bollywood take-the-law-in-your-hands movie, had the protagonists accept that they've been wrong. What most people failed to notice in the movie(which may be a fault, if that's how you wanna take it), is that there's Sharman Joshi's character, 'Sukhi' trying to dissuade the rest of his friends from the path his friends decide to take. To a certain extent, Kunal Kapoor's 'Aslam' also tries the same. But the opposition is overcome by the majority and one gets the impression that Sukhi agrees to d what he did more because of his loyalty towards friends, rather than his coviction of the cause. Which is probably why, there's no scene where he sees the character he played in the documentary, before dying; quite unlike his other friends. However, I admit, Sidharth's Karan also does not see his Bhagat Singh.

The music by A.R. Rahman, as the initial reviews said, did indeed grow on you. Cliched or not that's happened to me in this case. Before the movie, I didn't listen to 'Khalbali' much, but after the movie that one's become a favourite. The songs have been used effectively and wisely in the movie, in that most songs do not run to their full length as in the album.

A certainly over-hyped movie with nothing but decades-old bollywood masala sprayed all over it...

Those who say that the movie has been made with a vision dont understand both cinema and its purpose ...

Chutiya butthurt spotted. What he said is absolutely true. What did you feel about the movie? Did you also had that great feelings to do something after watching the pathetic ending and decided to be a movie critic instead sitting in one corner of your house and typing madly? Hypocrite saala. Sure thing government is going to send so many heavily armed officers to assassinate four college kids. Lolwa. Chutiye aisa hum log karne jaayenge to jute padenge. First read what he has written, butthurt guy. And go watch PBDHH whose theme has been copied by RDB and the former failed because it was ahead of its time.
